Day 1 of locking in with Hinduism- The Vedas and Dharma overview

Good Morning.

What are the vedas?

Scriptures, some of the older ones. They are revealed by the gods themselves and hence why are called the Srutis. They were memorised by sages called "rishis" who wrote them down.

They are divided into 4 parts:

1. Rigveda- the earliest one. "God is one, men call him by various names" - Rigveda.

2. Samaveda

3. Yajirveda

4. Atharveda

Soma ritual was important drink which rishis may have drank. Shraddha would include a prayer where priests throw a bunch of different objects into a fire. The humans give an offering/gifts and humans given blessings. Some dietas are personification.

The 4 vedas are divided into parts:

1. Samhitas: hyms to gods

2. Brahmanas: Communitries that explain the deeper meaning of samhitas

3. Aryankas: Discuss the deeper meaning of ritual sacrifice

4. Upanishads: texts that discuss life, death and existance.

Each of these parts are part of the different vedas.

Vedanta: the end of the vedas. They try and find the deeper meaning of life.
